Recently a US Court reached the following conclusion: Google controls about 90% of the online search market and 95% on smartphones. The ruling paves the way for a second trial to determine potential fixes, possibly including a breakup of Google parent Alphabet, which would change the landscape of the online advertising world that Google has dominated for years.
In the past Google has been fined numerous times for violation of antitrust laws:
– in 2017 EU fines Google โฌ2.42 billion for abusing dominance as search engine by giving illegal advantage to own comparison shopping service
– in 2018 EU Commission fines Google โฌ4.34 billion for illegal practices regarding Android mobile devices to strengthen dominance of Google’s search engine
– in 2019 EU Commission has fined Google โฌ1.49 billion for illegal misuse of its dominant position in the market for the brokering of online search adverts. Google has cemented its dominance in online search adverts and shielded itself from competitive pressure by imposing anti-competitive contractual restrictions on third-party websites.
