Cross-border transfers of waste are regulated by the Basel Convention and a OECD Council Decision. Switzerland, having ratified the Basel Convention and being a member of the OECD, is subject to the applicable requirements. To aid importers and exporters of such waste, the Federal Office for the Environment issued an updated guideline on 16 December 2024 that outlines the international and local legislation governing cross-border transfers of waste and that shall clarify vague legal terms and, in particular, explain the requirements and procedure for export authorisation and consent for import.
